Props in Yin yoga, which ones to use and why?

Yin yoga is a slow-paced and gentle practice that involves holding poses for longer periods of time, typically three to five minutes or more. This style of yoga is meant to target the deep connective tissues of the body and promote relaxation and stress relief. While Yin yoga poses can be done without any props, using some can enhance the practice and make it more accessible and comfortable for yogis of all levels. In this blog, we'll explore how to use yoga props in yin yoga and some of the benefits they can provide.

Using props in yin yoga can provide numerous benefits, such as:

  • Increased comfort and relaxation in poses

  • Improved alignment and stability

  • Increased flexibility and range of motion

  • Reduced risk of injury

  • Increased accessibility for yogis of all levels.

  1. Bolsters

Bolsters are soft, round or rectangular cushions that can be used to support various parts of the body during yin yoga poses. Placing a bolster under the knees during a seated forward fold or under the back during a supported fish pose can help to release tension and increase relaxation in the body. Bolsters can also be used to provide extra support in poses like sleeping swan or reclining butterfly, where the body is supported by the bolster rather than the floor.

2. Blocks

Blocks are a versatile prop that can be used in many yin yoga poses. They can be placed under the hands in a seated forward fold or under the hips in a seated meditation pose to provide support and help maintain proper alignment. Blocks can also be used to modify poses, such as placing a block between the thighs in a reclining bound angle pose to prevent the knees from falling too far apart.

3. Straps

Yoga straps can be used to increase flexibility and deepen stretches in yin yoga poses. For example, in a seated forward fold, a strap can be wrapped around the feet and gently pulled forward to deepen the stretch. Straps can also be used to provide support in poses like sleeping swan or dragonfly, where the hands can hold onto the strap to help maintain proper alignment and prevent strain on the shoulders.

4. Blankets

Blankets are a great prop for adding extra cushioning and support in yin yoga poses. They can be used under the hips or knees for extra support in seated poses, or folded and placed under the head for added comfort. Blankets can also be used to provide warmth during the final relaxation pose, savasana.

When using props in yin yoga, it's important to listen to your body and adjust the props as needed to find a comfortable and safe position. Props should never cause pain or discomfort, and if they do, they should be adjusted or removed.

Experiment with different props and see how they can help you deepen your practice and find greater ease and relaxation in your body and mind.
